Wii Remote Purist

Controls can make or break a game, and controls are controlled by… the controller. So it makes sense that an experienced gamer such as myself would opt to always use the right tool for the job, the optimal controller for the game. Yet, I do not. The Wii Remote was designed to be versatile with an array of control schemes, but optimized for motion/pointer control. To compensate, peripherals are added to extend its versatility: nunchuk, classic controller, etc.

But what’s my favorite control scheme on the Wii? Just the Wii remote, all by itself. From Excite Truck to Punch Out to New Super Mario Bros, there’s something about the simplicity that feels good. Even on the Virtual Console, I prefer getting games on platforms that don’t require the classic controller. It’s not that I don’t love the SNES and N64 games on the VC. I just barely play the few that I have. And it’s not that I don’t like the nunchuk or classic controller, either. I guess I’m just a Wii Remote purist.
